Coal India Limited (CIL) is the government-owned coal company under the Ministry of Coal. It works through eight subsidiary companies — seven coal-producing companies and one planning and design institute.
Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) — Sanctoria, Asansol, West Bengal. Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) — Dhanbad, Jharkhand; mainly coking coal. Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) — Ranchi, Jharkhand. Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) — Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh. Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) — Nagpur, Maharashtra. South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) — Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh. Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) — Sambalpur, Odisha.
Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI), Ranchi, is the eighth: it does exploration, mine planning and consultancy rather than producing coal. The Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) in Telangana is a separate government coal company, not a CIL subsidiary.
What it means if you trade coal
Each subsidiary publishes its own notices, offers and contacts. For anything current — auction offers, rates, siding notices — go to the subsidiary's or Coal India's official site rather than a forwarded message.
